Vicente Matellán, Principal Investigator of the EXPLICIT project and Professor of Computer Architecture and Technology at the University of León (ULE), participated as a panelist in a round table discussion dedicated to the Explainability and Traceability of Artificial Intelligence models. Both aspects are essential to guarantee the reliability, human oversight, and accountability of AI systems, especially in critical environments such as the military, where decisions can have significant operational and ethical consequences.
The REAIM Summit (Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain), held in Spain for the first time following previous editions in The Hague and Seoul, brought together governments, international organizations, experts, companies, and civil society representatives to debate the responsible use of AI in the defense sector. The meeting gathered more than 600 attendees and delegations from dozens of countries, including ministers, defense and foreign affairs officials, multilateral organizations, the technology industry, and the academic community.
The summit’s primary objective was to move toward concrete measures that translate the principles of responsible AI use into operational commitments. By reinforcing international cooperation and a multi-sectoral approach, the event addressed the technological, ethical, legal, and social challenges posed by artificial intelligence in the military sphere.
